What the trail register collects

  • Your name, if you give one. Blank notes are signed “Anonymous hiker.”
  • Your note.
  • Your email, only if you send a private note and choose to leave one.
  • A one-way, salted hash of your IP address, used to stop spam. Your actual IP address is never stored.

Who sees it

Public notes appear on the wall with your name and the date, after Scott approves them. Private notes go only to Scott. Your email is used only to reply and is never shown or shared.

Cookies and analytics

The site uses Google Analytics to see which pages people read, only if you say yes. Until you accept, nothing is sent to Google and no analytics cookies are set. If you accept, Google Analytics sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_F6802W7S0Z, to count visits and tell new visitors from returning ones. They are kept for up to 14 months, as set in Google Analytics. Advertising features are off. Analytics also counts which links and features are used, never what you type.

Your choice is saved in your browser, not in a cookie. To change it, open . The same button is at the bottom of the home page. Declining after accepting removes the analytics cookies.

Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a note comes from a person, may set its own cookie when you send a note.

How long it is kept, and deletion

Notes and emails are kept until you ask for them to be deleted. Spam-check records are deleted after 24 hours. To have your note or email deleted, send a private note on the trail register saying which note is yours, or reply to any email from Scott.
